Google just turned search results into a construction site.
This summer, Google is rolling out Generative UI to all users: a system where Gemini 3.5 Flash assembles custom interactive widgets, comparison tables, calculators, simulations, and dashboards directly inside search results — built on the fly for each query. Not templated. Not pre-built. Generated in real time from whatever structured data Google can find.
For brands, this is the most significant shift in how Google displays business information since the Knowledge Panel launched in 2012. And unlike the Knowledge Panel — which was a static card Google assembled once and updated periodically — Generative UI is dynamic, query-specific, and built from raw data every time someone searches.
The question is no longer whether your website ranks. It is whether your data is structured enough for Google to build with.
What Generative UI Actually Does
Generative UI is not another variation of AI Overviews. AI Overviews summarize text. Generative UI builds interfaces.
When a user searches for something that benefits from an interactive experience — comparing products, evaluating services, planning a trip, researching a purchase — Google no longer just returns a list of links or a text summary. It generates a custom mini-application directly in the search results page.
These generated interfaces pull from live data sources: reviews, maps, weather, inventory, pricing, product specifications, business hours, and structured content from across the web. The system uses Google's Shopping Graph — which contains more than 35 billion product listings — and combines it with data extracted from web pages, business profiles, and structured markup.
For product queries, this means Google can generate a comparison widget showing your product alongside competitors with real specifications, real prices, real availability, and real review data. For service queries, it might build an interactive tool that lets users filter providers by location, rating, price range, and service type — all without leaving the search page.
The critical detail: Generative UI does not read your marketing copy and display it beautifully. It extracts structured data and assembles it into whatever interface best serves the query. If your data is structured, specific, and machine-readable, you become building material. If it is buried in paragraphs of prose, you become invisible.
The 93 Percent Problem
Here is where this gets uncomfortable.
Google AI Mode now surpasses one billion monthly users. AI Overviews trigger on 48 percent of all queries and reach an estimated 2 billion people monthly. And when an AI summary appears, users click traditional search results only 8 percent of the time.
That means 93 percent of the interaction happens inside Google's generated content. Not on your website. Not on your landing page. Inside the widget, the summary, the dashboard that Google built.

Tier 1: Structured Data (JSON-LD Schema)
JSON-LD markup on your pages is the most direct signal. Product schema, Organization schema, LocalBusiness schema, Review schema — these tell Google exactly what your business is, what you sell, how much it costs, and what customers think. This data flows directly into generated widgets without interpretation or inference.
Brands with comprehensive schema markup get represented accurately. Brands without it get whatever Google can infer from unstructured content — which is often incomplete, outdated, or wrong.
Tier 2: Google Business Profile and Merchant Center
Your GBP and Merchant Center data feeds directly into Google's knowledge systems. Business hours, service areas, product inventory, pricing, photos, attributes — all of this becomes raw material for Generative UI widgets. A restaurant with complete GBP data gets a rich interactive card with hours, menu, reviews, reservation options, and photos. A restaurant with minimal data gets a name and an address.
Tier 3: Shopping Graph
Google's Shopping Graph contains 35 billion product listings from across the web. If your products are in the Shopping Graph with complete data — specifications, pricing, availability, reviews, images — they appear in generated comparison widgets. If they are not, your competitors do.
Tier 4: Web Content (Structured Over Prose)
When explicit structured data is not available, Generative UI falls back to extracting information from web page content. But it has a strong preference: content organized in tables, lists, specification grids, and clearly structured formats extracts cleanly. Content buried in marketing paragraphs does not.
A product page that lists specifications in a structured table gives Generative UI clean data to work with. A product page that describes the same specifications across five paragraphs of persuasive copy gives it almost nothing.

This hierarchy reveals a fundamental problem for most brands: their data layer is incomplete, inconsistent, or entirely absent.
Consider what happens when a user searches for your brand name right now. Stale Cross-Platform Data
Your website reflects current pricing and features, but your GBP, marketplace listings, and directory entries still show last year's data. Generative UI pulls from all of these sources. The widget it builds might show outdated pricing right next to a competitor's current pricing — and the user has no way to know which is accurate.
The Structural Advantage of Brand Data Control
Here is the strategic opportunity.
Only 17 to 36 percent of traditional top-ten rankings overlap with the sources that AI Mode cites. The old SEO hierarchy — where domain authority and backlinks determined visibility — does not apply to generated interfaces. Generative UI rewards data quality over page authority.
This means a brand with comprehensive, consistent, structured data can appear prominently in generated widgets regardless of its traditional search ranking. Nestlé measured an 82 percent higher click-through rate for pages appearing as rich results compared to pages without structured data. Rotten Tomatoes saw 25 percent higher CTR across more than 100,000 pages with proper markup. And brands cited in AI Overviews earn 35 percent more organic clicks and 91 percent more paid clicks than non-cited brands.
These numbers predate Generative UI. As search moves from text summaries to interactive widgets, the premium on structured data will only increase.

Audit Your Brand Data Layer
Start by seeing exactly what Google sees when it looks at your brand. Not what your website says — what the aggregate of every surface where your brand appears says.

Your brand fingerprint — logo, colors, fonts, description, social profiles, contact information — needs to be identical across every surface. One inconsistency is one wrong data point in a generated widget.
Structure Everything Google Might Build With
Every piece of information that could appear in a comparison widget, a product card, or a service dashboard needs to be in structured format. Not described in prose. Structured as discrete, extractable data points.
For products: implement complete JSON-LD Product schema with name, description, brand, price, availability, review aggregate, specifications, and category. For services: implement Service schema with provider, area served, price range, and service type. For your business: implement Organization schema with name, logo, contact information, social profiles, and founding details.
Synchronize Your Cross-Platform Presence
Your GBP, Merchant Center, marketplace listings, social profiles, and directory entries must match your website exactly. Not approximately. Exactly. Generative UI cross-references sources. Every discrepancy is a potential error in a generated interface.
Monitor What Google Builds
As Generative UI rolls out, actively search for your brand and your key product queries. See what widgets Google generates. Check whether the data it displays is accurate, current, and complete. If it is not, trace the error back to its source — a stale listing, a missing schema property, an inconsistent attribute — and fix it.
The End of the Website as Primary Touchpoint
Generative UI represents a fundamental shift in the relationship between brands and search. For two decades, search was a distribution channel — it sent users to your website, where you controlled the experience. That model is ending.
In the Generative UI model, Google uses your data to build experiences on its own surface. Your website becomes a data source, not a destination. Your brand identity, product specifications, pricing, reviews, and business information become raw materials that Google assembles into whatever interface it determines serves the query best.
This is not necessarily bad. Brands with clean, structured, comprehensive data will be represented accurately and prominently in generated interfaces that reach 2 billion people monthly. Brands without it will be misrepresented, incomplete, or absent.
The difference is entirely a function of your data layer. Not your SEO strategy. Not your content marketing. Not your domain authority. Your data: how structured it is, how consistent it is across surfaces, and how machine-readable it is.
